Cowboys Stadium Misses Attendance Record

By: Austin Kellerman
Updated: February 7, 2011
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' attempt to get the largest Super Bowl crowd in NFL history has come up short.

The official game attendance Sunday was announced at 103,219. The mark leaves the team just less than 800 shy of the record set by the 1980 Super Bowl at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. 103,985 people attended that contest.

Approximately 15,000 temporary seats were added to Cowboys Stadium in a bid to set the record for the largest crowd in Super Bowl history. Additionally, fans who watched the game from outside the stadium in the party plazas were counted in the overall attendance figure.

It's possible the record could have happened if it weren't for a large number of temporary seats being deemed unsafe for spectators. Prior to game time, the Arlington fire marshal reportedly ruled some seats weren't secure enough to be considered safe.

The winter storms that struck North Texas earlier had set back work on the temporary seating sections.
