City council members today appointed a builder for Lubbocks newest fire station. Minnix Commercial Partners made the winning bid, and will begin construction soon on Fire Station Number 17. The station will be located near 63rd Street and Indiana Avenue. Captain Rhea Cooper says the new station will help cut down on response times and possibly reduce insurance premiums for people who live close to the station. "Theres some minimal concern about the noise of the sirens, stuff like that. Im trying to reassure those residents because when we build a fire station in a neighborhood, we are very good neighbors," says Chief Cooper. Because of the stations central location, Chief Cooper says theyll be able to reduce fuel consumption during training practices. If theyre able to reduce the citys expenses that means they will also be reducing taxpayers expenses.
