DWI Arrests Down 20 Percent

Despite a drunk driving crash late Wednesday night, Lubbock police say DWI arrests are actually down more than 20% from this time last year.

From January to July of 2007, Lubbock police arrested 595 drunk drivers inside the city limits.  This year, the number of DWI arrests is at 472.  Lt. Jon Caspell with the LPD says they're encouraged by the lower numbers.  Caspell says, "If the law does what it's intended to, the DWI's are going to be down. Not just necessarily from enforcmeent, but the public understanding, if I'm goign to go out and drink and drive, I'm going to get arrested so, hopefully that's the trend we're seeing in the numbers."

Caspell reminds everyone, if you have any alcohol in your system, you shouldn't be driving.  In Texas, the legal limit is .08.
