Tech Student Arrested for Kidnapping and Sexual Assault

A 21 year old Texas Tech student is behind bars this afternoon charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault.
David Watson was arraigned this morning
According to court documents the victim claims he had been drinking heavily the night of May 6th, and was told not to leave the home or she "would be ruined."
Watson allegedly forced the victim to perform sexual acts, while he recorded and took photos of the victim.
According to police, Watson threatened that he would distribute the sex tapes on the internet.
Watson's attorney Chuck Lanehart issued the following statement...

David maintains his innocence regarding these accusations.  He is a 21-year-old Texas Techjunior communications major.  He has no criminal history, and comes from a very fine familybackground. Both of his parents are retired chiefs of police.  We look forward to a speedy trial ineach of these cases.

I am upset as to the manner of David's arrest this morning.  David cooperated with theauthorities from the time of the original investigation on May 6, and he has complied with the termsof his release from jail.  I have been in contact with the Criminal District Attorney's Office (CDA)since shortly after David was originally arrested.

I was prepared to voluntarily turn David into the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office on the new warrants, and to waive his right to appear before a magistrate, as is done routinely on almost every criminal warrant.

But the CDA and the police insisted on arresting my client outside my law office and carrying him to the courthouse for a staged public spectacle, with the media obviously having been notified beforehand. The public was kept out of the courtroom to make way for television cameras.  The only reason for this staged publicity was to deprive my client of his right to a fair trial, and to deprive my client of his right to a fair jury pool.

I will be filing a writ of habeas corpus on David's behalf to challenge the $1.5 million in bonds set today. It is our position that the bond amounts are unreasonable and illegal.
