Spencer Out as Tech Baseball Coach

By: TTU Press Release
Updated: May 21, 2012
Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt has announced that head baseball coach Dan Spencer has been relieved of his duties.

The coaching change follows a disappointing season for the Red Raider baseball program as Tech finished 29-26 overall and last in Big 12 play at 7-17, failing to qualify for next week's Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City.  The seven conference wins marks the fewest for a Tech team since winning just five Southwest Conference games in 1990.

"Texas Tech has had a very strong tradition in baseball exemplified by our nine NCAA regional tournament appearances and our four conference championships," Hocutt said.  "I expect all of our teams to compete nationally and win in every aspect.   We will find the best man to lead our baseball program to Omaha."

Spencer came to Texas Tech in July 2007 to join the staff of former head coach Larry Hays, where he served one season as associate head coach.  Following the retirement of Hays in the summer of 2008, Spencer took over as the eighth head coach in program history.  In his four seasons at the helm, Spencer compiled an overall record of 115-112 and a 44-61 mark in Big 12 Conference play.  The Red Raiders failed to make the NCAA postseason during his four years as head coach.

Tim Tadlock has been named interim head coach and the nationwide search for Spencer's replacement will begin immediately.
