The City of Lubbock has initiated a full Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activation. At about 2:15 AM, the City of Lubbock experienced city-wide power outages that has affected power throughout the city. There were unconfirmed reports of outages at 71st Street and Avenue P as well as the Holly Station. The source has been identified as a lightening arrestor failure out of the Wadsworth Plant at 34th Street and Guava Avenue. There are no reports of injuries from any explosions.
Reported problems from the outage include no power in many neighborhoods, low water pressure, no power to street lights, and non-functioning traffic intersections. Thus far, LPD has called in additional patrol units to handle call load and ensure city services are as unaffected as possible while directing traffic at as many intersections as possible.
LP&L is working to restore power to the city as soon as possible. The best estimates thus far are power should be restored in approximately 2 hours. In the meantime, citizens are encouraged to remain off the roads as much as possible until power is fully restored.
The City is also issuing a boil water notice effective immediately and until further notice.
