Mayor Dubbin Englund said Tuesday the city-run service has become too costly and is not taking in enough money.
Englund said the switch to UMC's service would be a plus for the city.
"We're not going to do anything to jeopardize this town," he said. "People that look to relocate or live anyplace, what are the first things they're looking for? Medical and schools."
According to Englund, talks began with UMC several months ago.
Word of the proposal has drawn opposition from some members of the community. An on-line petition has been started and a Facebook page set up to oppose the switch.
The petition says keeping the EMS service local will preserve jobs and ensure response times do not suffer.
The group plans to present its petition to the Slaton City Council at their meeting on Monday, July 30th.
