KAMC Investigates: Apartments in Disrepair

Among her biggest problems was the water she was using to wash those dishes: it was cold.
Menahan explained that her hot water heater is broken and the only way she can get hot water to do the dishes is by boiling a pot of water on the stove.
As she rinsed and scrubbed, a pot bubbled away nearby.
She said the lack of hot water is just the latest in a string of plumbing problems with her home at the J & B Apartments on E. Darthmouth off MLK.
"Sometimes we can't even take showers and baths because of the plumbing," Menahan said. "This is for three years."
On top of the current water issues, Menahan said her top complaint is the bugs crawling throughout her apartment.
"Roaches so bad that when you sit on the toilet you better not be on the tank or else you'll have roaches crawling all over you," she said.
Menahan said she has asked the property manager to fix the problem multiple times but each request goes unanswered.
KAMC Investigates reached the woman who owns the apartments by phone Monday afternoon. She said the repairs had not been made because work orders must be made in writing; something she said Menahan never did.
Across the driveway, Menahan's neighbor, Latosha Sanders, showed our cameras other problems with her apartment.
"You don't live!" Sanders exclaimed. "You're just here, you don't live. This is not living, this is not living at all."
Sanders' apartment does not have a working heater. Her living room is also without electricity, most likely because of the missing fuses, she said.
"The only way I can get electricity is if another cord is running in another room is plugged up," Sanders said. "It has to be plugged up. If not, then my electric don't work up in here."
Sanders said the lack of electricity is a big problem in her home because two of her children are on heart monitors and a third needs oxygen.
The owner of the apartment declined to speak with KAMC Investigates on camera but said most of the problems with Menahan's and Sanders' apartments have been caused by the residents.
She said some of the repairs have not been made because both women stopped paying their rent in July, something both women said they did because repairs were not being made to their apartments.
Both women are being evicted from their apartments this week.
