Young children are having to spend the night in the local Child Protective Services office, due to the great need for area foster homes.

Amber Fischer with CPS said there are about 1700 kids in foster or adoptive care in our area.
She said that's a drastic increase from previous years.

Not only do the kids have to stay overnight at the office, when a foster home finally opens up a lot of the time is it far away from Lubbock.

Fischer said there are about 400 local children placed in homes as far away as Houston and she said that can be even more harmful on the child.

"That's difficult for them because they need to stay close to their homes and close to their families so that they can continue visiting them. So they're not even getting to stay in the same area that they grew up in and that's very hard for them," Fischer said.

She said there are plenty more reasons to become a foster parent and if you are interested they're looking for both families and single people.

For more information on becoming a foster parent, or if your church is interested in having trainings at your place of worship, contact Amber Fischer with the Department of Family and Protective Services at 806-741-3226.

The following list are other groups in Lubbock that also license families or individuals to become foster parents...

This is so sad that there aren't enough foster homes for children in need. Have you thought about becoming a foster parent? Learn more: http://www.kidspeace.org/services.aspx?id=3596
