Texas Tech Softball Announces Fall Roster

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech softball coach Shanon Hays announced the program's fall roster Tuesday after 27 student-athletes reported to campus for the start of the fall semester.

"We couldn't be happier to have this group back on campus," said Hays, who is entering his fourth season in the Tech dugout. "We have quite a bit of work to get done this fall to prepare us for next season, but we are excited to get started next week. This is the largest signing class during my tenure and we thrilled to finally have them on campus."

The Red Raiders will start individual workouts Sept. 4 before the first team practice Sept. 17. Tech will also play a series of seven exhibition games over the months of September and October.

Hays returns 12 letterwinners from his 2012 squad that finished 41-17 and advanced to the postseason for a program-best third-straight season. The group of returners include top hitters Mikey Kenney, Sandy James, and Adriana Perez along with the main pitching rotation from a year ago in Cara Custer and Brittany Talley.

After the departure of eight seniors from that squad, Hays will be looking to a talented group of 12 newcomers to fill spots around the diamond as Tech lost five position starters and several key reserves from a year ago.

Shelby Johnson and Olive Naotala highlight the list of newcomers after both were named JUCO All-Americans the past two seasons while playing at Chattanooga State and Howard College. Tech's class of 10 freshmen also spans the country, ranging from Washington and Oregon on the west coast to Mississippi product Gretchen Aucoin.

The Red Raiders open the 2012 fall schedule Sept. 28 against Howard College. All fall games will be played at Rocky Johnson Field.
