Lubbock Could Follow In Amarillo's Footsteps, Ban Talking/Texting While Driving

Doing away with cell phones while driving, or at least the texting function on the hand held devices, is an issue circling City Hall once again.
"We're at the very beginning of what I think is going to be a long discussion," Lubbock Mayor Glen Robertson said.
This comes after Amarillo City Commissioners last week approved a city-wide ban of cell phone use behind the wheel.
Lubbock Mayor Glen Robertson said he's received numerous calls about the topic and said there are really two things the council would need to decide.
First, whether to ban texting while driving or simply ban drivers from using hand held cell phones altogether.
Either way, he said there's enough public interest on both sides of the issue, that we should soon see it on an upcoming council agenda for discussion.
"If a council person puts an ordinance forth and if it's passed, we'd have to do a first reading and a second reading, then we would truly have an ordinance," Robertson said.
The earliest the controversial item could be put on a council agenda would be two weeks from Thursday.
Mayor Robertson said he supports a texting while driving ban, but he is still undecided when it comes to a complete ban on cell phone use behind the wheel.
