Fraternities and sororities can sometimes get a bad rap, but on Texas Techs campus, Greek life is a lot about giving back to the Lubbock community. This is Rush Week for the 21 frats and 11 sororities on campus, and Greek officers stress the community service ideal to all their new recruits. Each group supports a local and national philanthropy, and they try to get out into the Lubbock community to help as much as possible. Says fraternity member Chase Evans, "Community service is a big part of us, its a big part of Greek life in general. The community gives alot to us, so we just wanna give back to them. There is a stigma, and thats unfortunate, but we give thousands and thousands of dollars, manhours." Panhellenic Association President Kristi Drennan explains, "They each hold different philanthropy events throughout the year, and that takes a lot of preparation so when these new girls get into the chapter, theyll learn how to prepare for those events, and run those events, and how to give back to the community."
