LFD Uses Fire Prevention Week to Educate Kids about Fire Safety

Deputy Fire Marshall Ross Alexander takes a mobile home around to every Lubbock elementary school throughout the year to educate kids about fire safety.

"This is the Fire Safety House," Lt. Alexander said.  "There are five different rooms inside and we talk to them about five different safety subjects and what would you do if your house caught on fire.  And then we bring them out here and let them go through the house."

There's even a voice recording inside the house to remind the kids how to stay safe in each room.

The Lubbock Fire Department has been traveling the house from school to school for 25 years, and for a good reason.

"We'll it's been proven, over national statistics that education for kids on the subject of fire safety works," Lt. Alexander said.  "Of course our subject mainly here is about house fire.  But we also talk about stop drop and roll, if your clothes catch on fire, and the most important thing in here is the importance of a smoke detector in your house."

He said houses need at least one smoke detector in every bedroom and hallway and to check their batteries twice a year.

"A small trash can fire can escalate to engulf the whole room within a couple minutes," said Lt. Alexander.  "If we could get a smoke detector in every house we can stop fire deaths here in Lubbock.  We've never had a fire death in Lubbock, Texas where there has been a working smoke detector."
