Covenant, Tech Sorority Team Up To Bring Books To Sick Kids

"We'll say, 'Do you mind if we read to you,' and they'll say, 'Oh, that's okay,'" Melanie Silvestri said.
Silvestri is a Pi Beta Phi at Texas Tech.
Her sorority teamed up with Covenant to launch Angel Library.
"It's nice just to bring some outside attention to the kids since most of them are cooped up in the hospital for long periods of time," she said.
Every afternoon at 4:00, they take the elevator up and wheel their cart down the hall.
They stop in rooms to read to kids who are sick in bed.
"The kids see us in and out of the rooms everday, but to bring a new face in is so exciting," Katie Reed said.
Reed is a Child Life Specialist at Covenant.
"They just love getting new visitors everyday that are not in there to poke them or prod them or try to give them medicine," she explained.
She said seeing the volunteers and smiles on the kid's faces help to make a not so ideal situation, a little better.
"We just want to bring some light into their day and hope they like it," Silvestri added.
Right now, the Angel Library is a mobile operation, but plans are in the works to make it a permanent addition to the pediatrics floor.
