2008 Cotton Crop Headed For Lower Numbers

The recent rains gave a much-needed boost to the local cotton crop, but farmers say it may be too little too late. Heavy rains last week were a huge benefit to the still-growing plants, but a hot dry spring took an early toll on this years crop. Between the hot weather and the hail earlier this summer, South Plains farmers have lost about one million acres already. They produced 5.3 million bales last year, but the USDA has projected a much lower 3.7 million for this years crop.
