West Texas may not physically feel Hurricane Sandy, but volunteers with the American Red Cross in Lubbock are preparing to head east and help out.

"The red cross works together, we are one family, we need every community, no matter how close or far away you are," said Shannon Smith with the South Plains chapter of the Red Cross.

"We are all impacted no matter where you are, and like I said volunteers and donor relations is how the red cross is able to take care of our communities and clients," said Smith.

There are 100 volunteers in Lubbock, and six of them are fully up to date and ready to go in case they're called east. "We're in a waiting game like everyone else, and we may get a call on Thursday that says we need your emergency response vehicle," said Smith.

Smith said the call would come Thursday, as that's after the bulk of the storm would hit the coast, and those East may need the most help in the aftermath.

No one from Lubbock has set out yet, but eight volunteers from Dallas left this weekend to lend a hand.

"There's always the potential, and the Red Cross is always ready to assist in client and community needs," said Smith.

While the Red Cross is gearing up to help out, others are shutting down.  The US Financial markets closed Monday and Tuesday due to the weather, something that hasn't happened since 1985 due to Hurricane Gloria.

"When I heard the market was shutting down, I mean I had never heard it shut down because of weather," said Jennifer Dever, who works at Pennington, Bass and Associates, a financial firm here in Lubbock.

Dever said we do feel the effects of the market being closed, but she also sees how the hurricane could impact the economy in the long run. "It becomes kind of a stimulative event, because of the necessary rebuilding of buildings and roads and bridges and all of those things that have to be put back together," said Dever.
