1. Hurricane Sandy Made Landfall Near Atlantic City

Sandy made landfall as a post-tropical cyclone near Atlantic City, New Jersey at 8 p.m. EDT on Monday night. The highest reported wind gust on land was 96 miles per hour in Suffolk County in New York.

2. Manhattan Sees Record High Tide

Record high tide was recorded in Manhattan on Monday at 13.88 feet. This is almost four feet higher than the previous record in 1960 from Hurricane Donna.

 
3. NYC Construction Crane Snaps in Sandy

A construction crane on top of a billion dollar luxury high-rise building in midtown Manhattan collapsed Monday in high winds during Hurricane Sandy. Some guests were evacuated as a precaution but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

4. Sandy Snarls Air Traffic

FlightAware.com tracked 700 flights on Monday as a result of Hurricane Sandy. There are usually approximately 10,000 airline flights on a regular Monday in the U.S. on the Eastern seaboard. On a normal day there are between 30,000 to 35,000 flights in the entire United States.

5. Superstorm Sandy Leaves Nearly 5M in the Dark

As of 2:30 a.m. EDT Tuesday morning, there are nearly 5 million customers up and down the east coast without power. More than 1 million of those customers are in New Jersey.
