Tech Falls 3-0 to TCU despite Big Individual Nights

LUBBOCK, Texas - TCU
overcame a 24-21 first-set deficit and carried that momentum into a 3-0
sweep (32-30, 25-22, 25-19) of Texas Tech Wednesday evening at
the United Spirit Arena.
The
Red Raiders (13-15; 2-10) trailed early in the opening frame before
rallying to take a 24-21 lead, only for TCU (14-10; 3-8) counter with
three-straight points.
Tech had three more tries to close the frame, but attacking errors
hampered the Red Raiders down the stretch.
Tech recorded 12 attacking errors in the opening frame alone before finishing with 25 in the match, 10 more than TCU's total.
"You
look at game one as such a tell-tell sign of what you need to do," Tech
head coach Don Flora said. "We had 10 more attacking errors in the
match and we had eight
more in the first set alone than TCU. It kind of hinges on those kind of
decisions - when to make the smart swing, when to make the big swing,
when to be smart and take the shot to live another day as opposed to
taking the high risk. That's the learning process
for us."
TCU
also trailed to start the second and third sets as well before rallying
once again. The Horned Frogs hit .240 as a team as opposed to Tech's
.145 average.
Yvonne
Igodan led the Horned Frogs with 17 kills and a match-high .438 hitting
percentage as she totaled just three attacking errors off 32 attacks.
She was the only
TCU player in double digits as Mattie Burleson and Sloane Sunstrum added
nine kills each.
The
Red Raiders, meanwhile, were powered by Breeann David's career-high 19
kills that marked the second-most for a Big 12 player in a three-set
match this season.
The sophomore also came close to her fourth career double-double as she
recorded nine digs to go along with four blocks at the net.
Brianna Grant and Miara Cave also connected on six kills each while Lydia McKay added five of her own to boost the Tech attack.
Despite
the loss, the night was special for Rachel Brummitt, who snapped the
Tech single-season digs record early in the first set before finishing
with 12 overall.
She passed Melissa McGehee's school-record total from 2000 as she now
has 459 digs on the season.
"Rachel
has very high expectations for herself and she has met them," Flora
said of his first-year libero. "In the rally score era, we don't have as
many opportunities
to dig balls, so it's really impressive to break a record that goes back
in history of this program where they had traditional scoring and had
to have the ball to score."
Brummitt
was assisted on the back row by Ellen Sorrells with eight digs and
Emily Ruetter with six. Ruetter also had 37 assists and a pair of blocks
from the setter
position as well.
The
Red Raiders will take a full week off before traveling to the state
capital to face No. 3 Texas next Wednesday in Austin. First serve is
slated for 7 p.m. at Gregory
Gymnasium.
