The Children's Advocacy Center of the South Plains is celebrating their "Diamond Anniversary."
"We serve as the hub of the wheel of child abuse investigation," Executive Director of the Children's Advocacy Center, Carmen Aguirre says.
Just last year, nearly 1,000 children from Lubbock and the surrounding counties went through the center and for ten years now, it has helped the abused and neglected children of the South Plains.
"We also will take cases where a child has been severely physically abused or where children have been witnesses to things like homicides, suicides, kidnappings, domestic violence, drugs in the home and internet pornography," Aguirre says.
The center facilitates communication and case review meetings between all the entities that are involved in child abuse investigations.
"It's a very real and present problem in this area and we'd like to help do something about it," Aguirre says, "and to hear that at the end, a jury's convicted someone and gave them two life sentences or a life sentence or 99 years or 40 years was our latest one, that's really rewarding to know that there's a child abuse perpetrator that will no longer have access to kids for a long, long time."
