With Gustav possibly headed for the Texas coast, Lubbock organizations are preparing to open shelters if evacuees head to The Hub City. Back in 2005, Lubbock received hundreds of evacuees from both Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Now, the city, Red Cross, and Salvation Army are getting ready to do the same if Gustav takes its toll on Texas. The Hub City is prepared to house around 800 special needs evacuees, mostly those who will require special medical attention. The Salvation Army is prepared to feed the evacuees. The Red Cross is calling on all their volunteers, as they might take on double duty. Says Bill Curnow, "This chapter could shelter those from the Gulf Coast but at the same time we could also send equipment and personel to the Gulf Coast to support those operations." Says Major Ernest Branscum of the Salvation Army, "We didnt have time to do this planning the last time, but the planning were doing right now, were getting ready for it, and well be ready for it if it happens. If they called us tonight, well be ready for it."
