Security Cameras Not Reliable

New Mexico officials continue to look into all the details of how Sunday night’s escape could have happened.  Right now, the case is just a whole lot of unanswered questions.

Who was watching the inmates?  And can you rely on your surveillance cameras?

Security cameras are the big concern now that this new footage has shown up from the New Mexico jail escape.

But here in Lubbock, officers say relying on cameras doesn’t replace the vigilance of a live officer.

Major Danny Downes with the Lubbock Sheriff’s Office says security cameras at the Lubbock County Jail are on 24-7, but not all of them record the whole time.

Before that alarms you, he says they always have an officer on duty to watch over the inmates.

And the jail has intrusion alarms, in which police have the instant ability to start recording if there is some suspicious activity within the walls.

All of these laws are based off of what's mandated by the state of Texas.

Major Danny Downes: “The commission of jail standards says that we can use closed-circuit TV to monitor inmates but it's not to take place of a live officer to supervise the inmates.  Can't speak for what happened in New Mexico, I don't have any idea if those inmates were being actively supervised or not.”

Major Downes says although there is no escape-proof jail, he's confident in Lubbock's security.
