breaking news
Starting Sunday, 500 hurricane evacuees will make Lubbock their temporary home. Cots are lining the floor and tiers of the Coliseum, and volunteers are ready to take care of hurricane evacuees. The city made last-minute plans Friday to accommodate up to 800 people in this shelter, and 500 will come tomorrow. This morning there were about sixty people registered to help the Red Cross and Salvation Army run the shelter. "We are here to help, and we do not care where they come from, what they do. We just want to be here so that we can be supportive to them," says C.E.R.T. coordinator Rayanne Thetford. C.E.R.T is looking for more volunteers, if youd like to help you can stop by the Mahon Library anytime after 9 a.m. tomorrow. Volunteers will help collect information from evacuees, grab food and bring them any supplies they may need that they werent able to bring here to Lubbock.
