Baylor Takes Down Tech in Their Final Game In the USA

LUBBOCK, Texas - Zoe
Adom led three Baylor players in double figures Wednesday as the Bears
took a 3-1 victory (25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21) over Texas Tech
at the United Spirit Arena.
Adom
finished with 19 kills, one shy of her career high, to pace a Baylor
(20-11; 7-9) offense that hit .297 as a team thanks in part to her .500
average that led
all players.
"Baylor
is a really good team," Tech head coach Don Flora said. "They're young
in some positions but their firepower kind of got us a little bit. We
were in it until
the third set and then we let them get on a run and could never match it
offensively."
Tori
Campbell and Alyssa Dibbern also had 16 and 15 kills each for the
Bears, who broke open a 1-1 tie in the third with 19 kills and a
match-high .395 hitting percentage.
Tech
(14-17; 3-12) had a chance to push the match into a fifth set with an
18-16 lead in the fourth before Baylor rallied to win nine of the final
12 points. The Red
Raiders hit just .111 in the final frame en route to finishing with a
.144 hitting percentage overall.
Despite
winning the second set, Tech's best hitting performance came in the
opening frame where the Red Raiders totaled 17 kills and a .231
percentage. Tech finished
with just 30 kills the rest of the way, however.
Part
of Tech's struggles offensively stemmed from Baylor's efforts at the
net as the Bears controlled an 11-4 advantage in blocks with Campbell
leading the way with
six followed by Adria Nora with five and Dibbern with four. Tech entered
the match just 1-13 this year when trailing in blocks.
"We're
in it, and then all of the sudden in game three we give up 19 kills out
of their 25 points." Flora said. "That's a little bit of our blocking
and a little bit
of our defense behind the block. Good blocking teams become better
defensive teams and we've got to be able to do that a little bit
better."
Breeann
David led the Red Raiders with 17 kills, eight of which that came
during the opening set. The sophomore also added eight digs and a pair
of blocks as well.
She
was assisted on the attack by Emily Ehrle with 11 kills and Miara Cave
with seven. Mikia Mills also added five kills off 15 attacks, while
Aubree Piper came off
the bench late in the third set to record three kills in her most action
since early October.
On
the back row, Rachel Brummitt recorded a match-high 16 digs, one more
than Baylor's Kate Harris, who finished with a double-double as she also
had 54 assists. Hope
Ogden also posted 12 digs for the Bears as well.
The
Red Raiders close the season on the road Saturday afternoon as they
travel to Lawrence, Kan. to face No. 20 Kansas. The match is set for a 1
p.m. first serve at
the Horjesi Family Athletics Center.
