"I enjoy helping people," Settle said. "So it makes it worth while."

Nobody likes to work on the holidays, but you're probably glad these people are.

"I hope we don't have to work a lot," Smith said. "That means everyone's getting to spend time with their family and not getting hurt or sick."

Chris Smith and Dusty Settle are firefighters are Station 4 here in Lubbock.

With over 13,000 fires nationwide on Thanksgiving each year, it's no wonder there is never a day off in the emergency business.

"Hopefully not very busy because we just like everybody to be safe and hang out with their families and what not," Settle said. "Just keep it quiet .

Unfortunately they didn't get their wish.

All of the people we talked to said the hardest part of working on the holidays is having to be away from their families.

"Being away from your family," Smith said.

"Being away from your family and just not getting to spend time with them," Settle said.

The station celebrated with a big feast of ham.

And of course it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without a little football...too bad Smith won't be watching it.

"I'll probably clean," Smith said.  "But yeah we'll probably watch it."
