Most people think of spring and summer for lawn care, but according to local landscapers, what you do to your lawn in the winter is just as important.

By taking steps for your lawn now, you can make sure to start of spring on the right foot when it comes to your yard.

"This time of year is an easy time of year to neglect your yard, forget about your yard," said Dylan Burns, President of Star Landscape.

Burns said that it is important to mow your lawn to about 2 inches before the cold temperatures set in.

"Typical thought process is 'hey, I need to leave it shaggy and long so it can stay warm,'" said Burns. "That's not the case, you want to go ahead and cut it, do your Winterization Fertilizer, and stay on a once a week, 8 to 10 minute water program, and you know that's simple, efficient guidelines."

Burns also said to not over-water your lawn, but keep a healthy amount of moisture for the grass.

It's also important to pick up any leaves in the yard before they build up too much, which can be harmful to the grass. "The longer you leave them on there, they can deteriorate, and leave bad bacteria," said Burns
