DPS confirmed that 56 year old Ortensia Perez, of Sundown, died in the crash.
EMS transported the passenger of the car, 26 year old Juana Perez, was transported to UMC with moderate injuries.
DPS said the minivan was headed East on Highway 114, when it hit a patch of ice, went off the road and rolled over. There were only two people in the car, both were wearing their seat belts.
"Everyone was belted in, and a trooper drove up on scene shortly after the accident, to help get the passenger out," said Sargent Witt.
"T here can be some black ice on the highway that you might not see, just slow down to get where you're going," said Sargent Witt.
DPS said they responded to 12 accidents between midnight and 9 a.m., and LPD said they responded to 16. Neither could confirm if all of the accidents were due to the weather, but a spokesman with LPD said 16 was an above average number for them.
Both streets in the city of Lubbock, and state roads were treated. Crews for both the City of Lubbock, as well as TXDOT are prepared to treat roads again Monday night, in case the below freezing temperatures could re-freeze any remaining ice.
"Give yourself a little bit of extra time to get where you're going, don't try to make up time on the highway," said Sargent Witt.
