Kliff Kingsbury hasn't even stepped foot on the sidelines as a head coach, but he's already making a big difference with student athletes.

Wednesday night, Texas Tech set up a site where fans could donate immediately to the Red Raider Scholarship fund.

And donate they did.

By Thursday morning, more than $18,000 was raised between two Texas Tech websites.

Amy Heard is the Associate Athletic Director for the Red Raider Club.

She said a lot of existing donors are giving more money than usual and alumni that have never donated are giving now.

When asked whether the Red Raider Club had ever seen that kind of response from fans after the announcement of a new coach, Heard said, "It's always exciting when you get a new coach and so we always see a spike. This is exceptional for us because it's connected with a student athlete."

Heard said they haven't set a fundraising goal for the scholarship fund since Kingsbury said "yes" to Texas Tech.
