In the wake of the Connecticut elementary school shooting that left 26 dead, most of them children, local parents are wondering how they can keep their families safe.

"This type of incident could take place in Lubbock," said Officer Chris Paine with the Lubbock Police Department.

And that's why the Lubbock Police Department expanded their Active Shooter Training Program.

They started the newly revamped program back in July after the Aurora Colorado Movie Massacre.

"This way they recognize 'hey, I've seen this before, I've experienced it in training, and now I can put it into action,'" said Paine.

And with another mass shooting, this time at an elementary school in Conneticuit, these programs are more relevant than ever.

"Since it's such a constant occurrence and something we've had to adapt to in our society today then we definitely need to be prepared as a community not just law enforcement," Paine said.

The hour long lecture teaches large groups like business, schools and churches how they should react in an active shooter situation.

Officer Paine specially tailors the plan for each group.

The training programs are open to the public.

If you'd like to set one up for your group call LPD:  (806)775-2865
