Witnesses tell us that when firefighters and police arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from inside the house and a man ran out with blood on him saying someone was dead inside.
Firefighters quickly put out the fire inside the home, with coordinated efforts to preserve the crime scene.
Lubbock Police have confirmed there was, in fact, a body inside the house and have put up crime scene tape around the home. Police say they continue investigating.
Sgt Stewart of LPD said, "We got a report of a man standing outside the duplex claiming to have killed his wife. When officers arrived on the scene they did find a man with blood on him. The duplex was on fire once the fire department responded and was able to get the fire extinguished we were able to enter the duplex, at that time we did find a body inside."
One neighbor on the scene declined to go on camera, but described the scene.
"He's bleeding and he's got a knife in his hand and I told him I said whats wrong whats wrong he said they came in my apartment, he said they came in he said my wife is dead in the apartment. I said your wife is dead? He said yeah," said that neighbor.
The man who ran out of the house covered in blood was taken to UMC with second degree burns across most of his body.
The fire department and police are working together on the investigation.
"We just tag team and as you've been able to see we meet quite a bit outside and kind of put together a game plan to work the scene together and not, try to stay out of each others way and still get everything that we need to get so if it is a crime justice is done and we know the truth," said Lubbock Fire Marshal Robert Loveless.
