Airplanes were still able to land up through around 1:00 p.m., which is when the delays began.
Airport officials say they have no control over whether a flight is canceled or delayed. It is completely up to the airline.
Late in the afternoon, fliers became stranded in Lubbock as airlines canceled flights and re-booked passengers on flights leaving Thursday. Many of those waiting in the airport were heading home for the holidays or waiting for loved ones to arrive.
"I had my first flight was canceled and then I was put on a second one. I didn't hear them say that my second one was canceled and now I can't get out until the morning," said Bryce Wenger, who is trying to return home from a business trip.
"I guess they were diverted or whatever to Midland TX, and we don't know when he will arrive in Lubbock," said MaryAnn Turner, who drove all the way from New Mexico in the Dust Storm to pick up her son.
