Is it the end of time or just the calendar?

Does the end of the Mayan calendar mean the end of the world?
"The world may end on December 21st but it won't be because the Maya predicted it."
Associate professor of Archaeology Brett Houk said the Mayan Calendar works like an odometer on a car, it reaches a limit and then starts over again at zero but that just means that calendar has ended. It doesn't mean that the world is going to end.
"So what happens is people realize the calendar is going to end and then you have people who are always fascinated with the end of the world and various dooms day scenarios and they just link the two together even though they have nothing really to do with each other.
Facebook groups have pages dedicated to the end of the world and have stocked up on supplies but for many people it's turned into a bit of a joke.
"I think it's just become more of a fun thing to speculate about and to post funny pictures about but no I don't believe it will actually happen."
The Mayan calendar ends on December 21st but with thousands of years since it was written it's tough to nail down the exact time.
"The Maya also didn't keep track of hours the way we do so we celebrate New Years at midnight. We wouldn't even know when to expect the world to end on the 21st. It could be at noon, or 1:30, we would have no idea."
Justin Garland believes the world will end eventually but he's skeptical that we will get a warning let alone a specific date.
"I think that there's not a calendar around that can tell us when that's going to happen."
