Officials are investigating the cause of a house fire at 4610 and 55th Drive Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters got the call just before 2.

No one was home at the time but two dogs were trapped inside.

Lucky for them, a good Samaritan was passing by.

Steven Torrez saw the fire on his way home before firefighters arrived on the scene.

"I'm pretty sure anybody else that has a good heart would do the same," Torrez said.

Torrez said flames were spewing from the roof and windows.

"The fire was pretty big and we got out to go knock and see if anyone was home but as I knocked I just heard dogs," Torrez said.

Torrez lifted a downstairs window, saw two dogs in a cage inside, and went in to save them.

"As I was getting the dogs out I could see fire coming from the kitchen so I hurried and got the dogs out and we got out of there," Torrez said.

Firefighters say the fire started on the outside between two apartments and may have been fueled by dry leaves or grass.

Marty Yandell with the Lubbock Fire Department said there are some things you can do to prevent fire at your home this winter.

"Just general house keeping in the yard," Yandell said. "There were a lot of dried leaves piled up in the yard and around the area. As dry as it is right now anything you can do around your house, tall grass, weeds, leaves. Try to keep it cleaned up."

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire but said most of the damage was on the outside.
