Seven years ago today, some brave men and women did their best to save lives at the World Trade Center in New York City, and because of their heroism, September 11th is now National First Responders Day. One of the most lasting images from that day are those first responders running into the Twin Towers as others were running away. These were fire fighters, police officers and volunteers who put victims lives before their own. The South Plains Red Cross Chapter honored our first responders today, and asks that we all do the same. "The interesting thing about first responders is theyre the last people in the world to want thanks. Theyre just doing their job day in and day out. So this gives us a wonderful excuse to say no, thank you. Thank you for doing the right thing, thank you for being there," says Red Cross volunteer Bill Curnow. Right now Red Cross volunteers and first responders in the South Plains are on standby, waiting to help Hurricane Ike evacuees if they do come to Lubbock in the next few days.
