Checker Cab service says their phones were ringing off the hook this New Years Eve.

"Last night we took in about 500 to 600 calls," said Checker cab employee Tish Weatherford.

Weatherford says this is the company's second New Years Eve and both have been extremely busy.

"New Year's tends to be a very very busy holiday, and I think that people want to start the New Year off right and it's probably why we received that many calls," said Weatherford.

She says these numbers show Lubbock drivers were thinking responsibly last night.

"There is a lot of people taking a moment consider to the consequences of drinking and driving," said Weatherford.

She says that even with the high volume of passengers, her drivers had very few problems.

"I think that when you have alcohol involved there tends to be some issues, but overall we had a really great night," she said.

Weatherford says the number of people who took cabs was not only good for business, it was good for the community.

"I think it's very important as a community that as we are celebrating when we are celebrating events like this that we do take a minute and consider everybody around us. And by taking a cab and doing that on new years just safe," said Weatherford.

A source in the DA's office tells us they don't usually see a lot of DWIs on New Year's because people know police will be out in force and a lot of other people are out drinking.
