Police are investigating a south Lubbock apartment fire after one person was found dead.

Fire crews were called to a fire at the Autumn Ridge Apartments at 82nd St and Avenue U just after 8:00 Friday night.

When they arrived, smoke was billowing from one of the units.

Firefighters then located a body inside.

Neighbors tell us an elderly woman lived in the apartment.

Lubbock Police say the death appears to be suspicious but have not elaborated on the circumstances that led them to call a full homicide call out.

Patrol officers stood guard over the crime scene over night.

While on scene late Friday night, a man walked up to a police officer at the complex and tried to steal the officer's gun. The suspect was wrestled to the ground and taken into custody.

Police have not released the identity of the suspect in the attack nor of the victim in the fire.
