"We say we have students from 18 to 80."
The Literacy Lubbock program helps people learn to read, learn English, and helps them get their GED all free of charge. Ezekiel Vasquez is studying for his GED with Literacy Lubbock but he also learned English through the program so he could communicate better in the United States.
"Sometimes before when I would go to the store to buy things for myself, the person when I paid, the ladies or the men would say 'I don't understand you' and sometimes I wasn't invited in the store because I didn't understand."
Ezekiel continues his education by learning to read and write English, as well as speaking it, for his GED. His tutor Sid McIlveen said helping students like Ezekiel succeed was worth all the volunteer time and effort.
"It's perhaps one of the most gratifying things that you can do to open the horizons of learning to someone, to help them to read or assisting them in attaining their goals."
Literacy of Lubbock is funded through the United Way and all the classes are taught by volunteers. Ezekiel volunteers in the program now as well and is grateful for the chance to learn and hopefully move up at his job.
"My goal is to get my GED because I work for 20 years in the same company...and when I started over there I didn't speak any English and this guy, he helped me, he gave me a job. He helped me a lot every day and I stayed for 22 years in the same company and now I can start again in the same company and that's what I want to finish me GED."
