"So competition is what drives the price here in Lubbock and in most places the stronger the competitors are then you'll see price fluctuation because of that."

Gas prices in Lubbock were still below 3 dollars a gallon and as the year goes on those prices were expected to rise but not nearly to the highs we saw over 4 dollars in 2008.

"The problems we've got, that Syria has right now, if that comes to a head that could create a market change drastically but that's one of those 'maybes' those 'ifs'."

Shantana Sandoval has an SUV and filling up her tank became difficult when the prices started to rise.

"But yes the gas mileage for that is not good. Highway miles are so much better than in town so yes when the prices go up I pretty much try to stay at home the most possible and not drive around as much because gas does get very expensive."

Senior energy analyst at gasbuddy.com, Patrick DeHaan, expected prices to rise another 35 cents a gallon through early April before peaking at about $3.95 a gallon. But the price of crude oil in addition to the local competition can make those prices fluctuate throughout the year.

"So I've seen crude oil go down on a particular day and the price of fuel actually go up, I've seen it the other way. So you can't always justify or put a certain number on an increase or decrease according to crude, it doesn't always work out that way."

The gas prices should increase steadily with the peak in April but Shantana Sadoval hopes the lower prices will stick around a little while longer.

"You know I've never seen gas prices this low in a long time, it's been a few years and I figured they would just stay that way but that was wishful thinking so I figured they would go right back up."
