With all of the violent crimes in Lubbock these past few weeks, it's important for residents to know that there are basic self defense moves that can help you in numerous dangerous situations.

The owner of Tae Kwon Do Institute, Master Sang Kim, demonstrated different self defense moves that anyone can use to protect themselves.

He has been practicing martial arts for thirty years, and he says anyone can learn how to defend themselves against an attacker.

"It's about protecting yourself. What happens to your opponent it doesn't matter," said Kim.

One of master Kim's favorite weapons to use when defending yourself are car keys. If your attacker comes from behind a few simple steps can guarantee a chance to get away.

First make sure you grip your keys properly with the sharp ends facing out. Strike the opponents eyes, give a quick kick to the groin with your knew, and then a final jab to their throat with the keys should put them on their feet. (See video above for all demonstrations).

Kim also showed us how to protect yourself if your opponent starts choking you. First break the opponents lock on your neck with a swift jolt down. Then use your thumbs to puncture their throat, slap your hands against their ears, then twist their neck and pull them down.

You can use other simple items like grocery bags or purses to defend yourself against an attacker. For example, if you're attacker approaches you from behind when you are leaving the grocery store, first distance yourself from them with a step, toss your groceries at them, and then kick them in the groin for a quick getaway. The attackers natural instincts will catch the groceries, giving you a chance to strike them and run away.

Kim said one of his least favorite weapons of defense are guns.  He said that one mistake defending yourself with a gun could give your attacker the chance to use it against you.

There are many different self defense techniques that you can learn by taking a simple course.

Whether you go to his studio or others around town, Master Kim said knowing a few self-defense moves could save your life.

Starting January 7, Master Sang Kim is offering one free self defense course to any woman who calls the Tae Kwon Do Institute in Lubbock.  This offer will expire at the end of the week. The Tae Kwon Do Institute information is listed below.
