Lubbock Christian gets redemption

LUBBOCK,
Texas (January 12, 2003) - Kelsey Hoppel posted 14 points and Nicole
Hampton had 10 rebounds and four blocks in the first half alone, and
No.1 Lubbock Christian University rolled to an 86-52 Sooner Athletic
Conference victory over Mid-America Christian University Saturday
afternoon inside Rip Griffin Center.
LCU
out-rebounded MACU 29-11 in the opening half of play and had three
players
in double figures in the half. Hampton had 10 rebounds and four of the
team's six blocks in the half. Hoppel, who led all scorers in the half
with 14 points, was joined in the half in double figures by Haley Burton
and Emily Atkins, who each had 11 points.
Leading 14-7 with 15:48 remaining in the half, LCU used an 11-0 run to
separate themselves early. They shot 52.5% (21/40) in the first half and
led 52-24 at the half.
The
Evangels struggled offensively to start the second half. MACU missed
their
first 15 field goal attempts of the half and spent the opening 7:46 of
the half without a field goal. By the time Kourtni Williams ended the
drought, LCU had a 67-27 lead. The Lady Chaps led as much as 75-32 (8:37
remaining) in the game and not one LCU starter
played more than nine minutes in the second half.
The
Lady Chaps dominated in paint scoring (48-18), points off turnovers
(14-7),
second chance scoring (22-1) and fast break scoring (12-0). Hoppel and
Atkins each co-led LCU with 15 points, with Atkins notching nine
rebounds. They also received 14 points from Burton and Hampton finished
with a career matching 14 rebounds (third time in
last four games) and 11 points. Hampton's four blocks was a career high.
LCU finished the game 33-of-73 from the field (45.2%) and held MACU to a
miserable 28.1% (18/64) from the field. The Lady Evangels did receive
offensive production from Parris Price (13
points), Kourtni Williams (12 points) and April Williams (10 points).
An
impressive number for the Lady Chaps was a 61-28 advantage in rebounds.
The
season-high rebound mark was the highest rebound total for LCU since
they garnered 73 on Dec. 31, 2009 against Dallas Christian College. The
mark was the most at home since Nov. 7, 2009 against Northern New Mexico
College, which was a rebound off the arena-record
of 62 against Huston-Tillotson on Nov. 17, 2000.
The
win improves LCU to 17-1 on the season and 4-1 in the SAC. The loss
kept
MACU winless (0-3) in SAC play and they are 9-5 overall. LCU does not
return to action until Saturday, Jan. 19 at University of Science &
Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha, Okla.
