For the 42nd year, the MLK Commemorative Council of Lubbock held their citywide celebration Sunday evening. This event was one of many events honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther king Jr. around Lubbock this weekend.

Hundreds gathered at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center to join in the celebration.

"The City of Lubbock wishes to join our community, our state and our nation in celebrating and honoring the life, legacy and important contributions of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," said Mayor Glen Robertson.

Mayor Robertson delivered a notice of recognition signed by himself and the entire Lubbock City Council.

"We urge all citizens join this celebration and take this opportunity to reflect upon the vision and ideas embodied by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," said Mayor Robertson.

"It shows that we are striving to come together," said LV Andrews, the President of the MLK Commemorative Council.

He says he has been involved with the planning of this event for years, and this MLK celebration is special for him because it coincides with President Obama's inauguration.

"I thank Dr. King civil rights, especially voting rights, where we can vote and express our opinion about what we like and what we dislike so its just a great MLK celebration and we look forward to doing it every year," said Andrews.

In case you missed these events, there is a gospel night at St. John Baptist Church Monday at 6:30.
