Volunteers are going to soup kitchens, churches, motels, and hitting the streets to get an accurate count of how many people are living without shelter.

The South Plains Homeless Consortium will send their findings to the State who will then send it to the Federal branch of Housing and Urban Development to determine if
Lubbock will receive grant money to improve conditions for the homeless.

Mary Guetersloh of the South Plains Homeless Consortium said this is a national campaign but it starts locally.

"It starts here with us getting out and counting the folks, looking at what are they like? What is it we can do to intervene in their plight?"
