LUBBOCK,
Texas (January 26, 2012) - No.1 Lubbock Christian University set a
program single-game
record with a 64% field goal shooting performance and Nicole Hampton was
two assists away from a triple-double, as her 22-point and 13-rebound
performance helped the Lady Chaparrals defeat No.15 Rogers State
University 100-78 Saturday afternoon in Sooner Athletic
Conference action inside Rip Griffin Center.
Despite
shooting 64% from the field, which topped the previous mark of 63.2% on
Feb. 11, 2011
against St. Gregory's, LCU was initially in a dogfight against the
Hillcats. A 5-for-5 shooting performance from three-point range, with a
3-for-3 start by Haley Burton beyond the arc, helped LCU take a 25-12
lead six minutes into the game. The long range shots
would quickly turn sour for the Lady Chaps as they were unable to hit
another three-pointer the remainder of the half (on nine attempts). RSU
climbed back into the game with hot shooting from Kelby Fritz, who
scored all 13 of her points in the first half. The
Hillcats climbed back to take a 43-41 lead before LCU closed the half
with a 6-0 run, which featured a Burton runner with three seconds
remaining for a 47-43 halftime lead.
LCU's
three-point shooting success returned in the second half. Burton nailed
back-to-back
three-pointers in the opening two minutes and Kelsey Hoppel connected on
her first attempt of the half for a 61-49 lead (15:07 remaining) and
LCU's lead never dipped below double figures from that point. Hampton
would help LCU open the half 4-for-4 from long
range and she scored 14 of her 22 points in the second half. Emily
Atkins led LCU and all scorers with 23 points and nine of her points
came in the final 3:40 of the game.
The
Lady Chaps would shoot 68.2% in the second half, only missing seven of
their 22 shot attempts.
For the contest, LCU was 32/50 from the field and 11-of-23 from
three-point range (47.8%). Inside the arc, LCU was 21-for-27 (77.8%).
The 64% shooting mark is the best by a SAC team this season and the best
mark since Oklahoma City shot 71.9% (vs. Baptist Bible)
on Nov.13, 2010. Their lone downfall was 19 turnovers leading to a 23-16
points-off-turnovers advantage by RSU. The Hillcats received 15 points
from Leah Smith and 14 from Logan Froese to go along with Fritz's
performance. LCU had a trio of players with over
20 points and four in double figures. Atkins, who was 4-of-6 from long
range, had 23 points, Burton, 5-of-8 from three-point distance, had 22
points and Hampton had 22 points. Hampton also had 8 assists and three
blocks. Kelsey Canavan produced 10 points in
the first half for LCU and finished with 14 points.
LCU reached 100 points for a second time this season. It marks the eighth time LCU has reached
at least 100 points in a game under Steve Gomez's coaching tenure and the 17th
time overall in program history. The
win, LCU's fourth straight, improves them to 20-1 on the season and 7-1
in the SAC. RSU falls to 16-6 overall and 6-2 in SAC play. LCU heads to
Oklahoma City next week and begins their trip facing Mid-America
Christian University Thursday at 6 p.m.
