The Brown family is in Austin today pushing for a statewide ban against texting while driving.

They're one of 13 families who joined lawmakers at the capitol this afternoon for a briefing about the proposed statewide ban.

Three years ago, the Browns lost their daughter, Alex, in a texting and driving car accident in Wellman, Texas.

If passed, the "Alex Brown Memorial Act" would make it illegal for Texans to write, read or send a text while behind the wheel.

Lawmakers passed a similar statewide ban two years ago, but Governor Rick Perry vetoed the bill seeing it as government overreach.

Jeanne Brown, along with her family, now travel around the state educating young drivers about the dangers of distracted driving.  Brown hopes they listen, because her daughter, alex, never did.

"That girl was texting after I told her hundreds and thousands of times and threatened to take her phone away," said Brown.

The ban would take effect on September 1 if passed.
