Triaminic, Theraflu lots recalled over defective child-resistant caps

Updated: January 31, 2013

NEW YORK Some bottles of Triaminic and Theraflu cold and allergy syrups are being recalled because the child-resistant bottle caps may be defective.

The recall covers 142 production lots of Triaminic syrups and 41 lots of Theraflu syrups. Novartis, which produces the medicines, says the defect could allow for the removal the cap without breaking the seal on the bottle. The company says it received four reports of adverse events related to the Triaminic products.

The products were made between May 2010 and December 2011 at a Novartis facility in Nebraska. Novartis shut down that plant in December 2011 after federal inspections found numerous quality-control problems.

Novartis says it believes 97 percent of the inventory has been used, returned, or quarantined.

A full list of recalled lot and NDC numbers, along with each of the products under the recall, can be found on Novartis' website.

A lot number can be found on the sides of the bottle, as seen here, while an NDC number is located on the upper right corner of the front panel of the box for Triaminic, and the upper left corner of the front of the bottle for Theraflu, as seen here.

Consumers with additional questions are encouraged to call Novartis Consumer Relationship Center at 1-866-553-6742.
