LUBBOCK, Texas (February 9, 2013) - No.16 Lubbock Christian University completed their home opening series with a doubleheader sweep of Texas College Saturday at Hays Field. They received a complete game outing from Kyle Forsyth in the first game for a 7-2 win and then held onto a three-run lead down the stretch for a 9-8 win in the second game.

A lead-off single by Wigberto Nevarez in the second inning of the opener led to a run, as a two-out double from Regan Pearson and an ensuing single from Christian Vazquez led to a 2-0 LCU lead. Forsyth held the Steers off the scoreboard until the top of the fourth inning. He hit the first two batters before surrendering consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly, which allowed TXC to tie the game 2-2. It did not take long for the Chaps to retake the lead, as in the bottom of the fourth inning, Nevarez led off again with a single and it led to a run with Brandon Wilson following with a triple to score him. Brent Leslie sacrificed in Wilson and LCU led 4-2 through four innings of play. They grabbed some insurance with a pair of runs in the fifth inning and a run in the sixth inning for a 7-2 Chaps lead.

Jason Fisch and Joel Lutz each had a sacrifice fly runs-batted-in for LCU, as LCU produced three in the game. Vazquez finished the game 4-for-4 to lead the LCU bats. Forsyth pitched his second complete game of the season and allowed two runs off six hits (all singles) in seven innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. Tyler Seibert suffered the loss for TXC and fell to 0-3. Matt McEuen went 2-for-3 in the game for the Steers in the losing cause.

In the second game, LCU had to continually fight off the Steers and it started from the start. LCU had a four-run first inning, with a triple from Lutz driving in a pair of runs before Brennyn Smith followed with a double leading to a 4-0 lead. The Steers came back in the second inning with lead-off doubles from McEuen and Moises Espinoza leading to a five-hit inning and a trio of runs to cut the Chaps lead to 4-3. Christian Vazquez extended LCU's lead to 5-3 with a triple in the bottom of the second inning, but TXC tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with Juan Mesa doubling in a run and then scoring on an Aaron Savoia single up the middle to place the score at 5-5. LCU regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning with Smith and Fisch hitting back-to-back doubles leading to a pair of runs for a 7-5 lead. Following a Steers run in the fourth inning LCU added two more runs in the fifth inning with a two-run home run by Wilson for a 9-6 lead. The lead turned out to be enough for the Chaps. Corey Heidebrecht had three doubles in the game, with his final one coming in the sixth inning highlighting to a two-run inning and cutting the Chaps lead to 9-8. Heidebrecht came up in the seventh inning with an opportunity to tie the game with a runner at third base, but Chaps pitcher Hunter Flake sealed his first victory forcing Heidebrecht into grounding out to second base to end the game.

The Steers produced six doubles in the game and Heidebrecht finished 4-for-5 with his trio of doubles. LCU received hits from eight different players. Smith, Fisch and Leslie each had multi-hit games with two hits each.

LCU improved to 7-1 on the season with the wins and Texas College fell to 2-10. The Chaps return to the road Thursday to face Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas to open a three-game series.
