Trouble on Tap: Handwashing Violations at Lubbock Restaurants

We've all seen the signs requiring employees to wash their hands in restaurant bathrooms, but KLBK found the sinks in many popular spots around Lubbock just aren't making the grade. Experts say its one of the most common violations they see, and its one of the most important ways to stop the contamination of food. KLBK's Michaela MacDonald is working for you tonight, with more.

The Lubbock Environmental Health Department says they have seen over 140 hand-washing violations in the last two years. Many of them at popular family-friendly restaurants.

These violations can be because something is blocking the sink, but many times it is because water isn't reaching the required 100 degree temperature.

They say the state of Texas has set that 100 degree standard because that's the temperature needed to kill germs and prevent food contamination.

We did some unofficial testing and found two of the five restaurants we checked didn't make that temperature.

The environmental health dept says they do inspections everyday, checking the most at risk restaurants.

Coming up tonight at 10, we'll bring you the full list of restaurants with violations and tell you how you can report an unsanitary restaurant.
