The Lubbock City Council voted to ban synthetic marijuana at its council meeting Thursday night.

The ban passed by a vote of 6-0, with Mayor Glen Robertson leaving the meeting early.

Thursday's vote caps a months-long debate over the issue, brought on in large part by Gina Johnson.

Johnson is a concerned mother who has spoke against the substance at multiple city council meetings.

After Thursday's vote, Johnson said she was happy with the council's first step but she said more must still be done to education local youth about the dangers of synthetic marijuana.

Council members did amend the ordinance to take out a provision that would have banned substances with a chemical similar to marijuana, which means substances with a chemical makeup similar to synthetic marijuana will still be allowed.

Local head shops and other stores that sell the substance have thirty days to get rid of their inventory.

I agree with you Larry. It seems that parents around Lubbock are willing to create a new black market thus making a new crime wave. If they legalize it then the problem still falls to the parent. Besides like Larry said it is not marijuana nor does it contain it. What about all of these marijuana dealers around Lubbock that have been in business for 2 to 3 decades? This is making it harder on our police dept. They will be spending time trying to catch real criminals and baby-sit kids by patroling smoke shops and all. Really I do not understand this at all. They should then ban alcohol (more readily available to minors thru bootleggers and parents homes, cellphones are the biggest killer of our youth than this stupid media hype to reduce lubbock revenue. I foresee a lot of crime on our way. Welcome To Lubbock, Texas-Home Of The Lazy Parents!

I agree that this stuff is bad for you. However, IT IS NOT Synthetic marijuana! It doesn't even have THC in it so how can you put a "marijuana" label on it? Just [censored]! No commonsense here at all. If you want to make a difference legalize marijuana and you wouldn't have to waste tax dollars and time on stuff like this. WAKE UP!!!
