LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball team picked up its second win on Saturday and third of the season with a nightcap victory over BYU, 5-1, in the second day of action at the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The Red Raiders improved to 3-0 while having held their opponents to a pair of runs through the first three games of the season. The only year in school history where Tech has held its opponents to fewer combined runs during the first three games came in 1992 (1 run).

Junior right-handed pitcher Trey Masek (1-0) earned the win while striking out a career-high eight batters in six shutout innings while allowing just two hits along with five walks.

For the third consecutive game the Red Raiders had a freshman right-handed pitcher finish the game with a three-inning save while Johnathon Tripp made his career debut striking out four with one run allowed on four hits while earning his first save.

BYU starting pitcher Adam Miller (0-1) took the loss while giving up four runs on just three hits with six walks and six strikeouts in five frames on the mound.

The Red Raiders tallied only four hits in the game but used their opportunities wisely as all five players that scored runs reached base on walks.

Sophomore designated hitter Elliot Richoux started the scoring for Tech with an RBI double to left-center field that scored two runs following an error by BYU center fielder Jaycob Brugman. The next inning Tech plated another run on Bryant Burleson's infield RBI single to give Tech a 3-0 lead.

Burleson was the only Red Raider who posted a multi-hit game going 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Although, three Red Raiders (Brett Bell, Burleson and Mason Randolph) had two walks a piece.

The Red Raiders stretched their lead to five runs with a run in the fifth inning and on Burleson's RBI single to center field in the seventh.

BYU's top two hitters in its batting order went a combined 4-for-9 while the rest of the Cougars combined went 3-for-22 with nine strikeouts at the plate.

The Red Raiders will complete play at the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic on Sunday while hosting Northern Illinois for a 1 p.m. first-pitch at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
