If you've gone to fill up your gas tank recently, you may have been surprised by the bill. Gas prices are known to spike in the summer months, but this early price increase has some consumers worried.

"It's just ridiculous because they keep going up," said Belinda Picon.

Picon says the recent increase in gas prices around Lubbock is hurting her budget.

"I'm disabled and $5, $10 don't get you nowhere, nowhere," said Picon.

The national average gas price is now $3.67 per gallon, and Lubbock isn't far behind. Exactly one month ago there were stations down in the $2.70s and $2.80s, now most stations are averaging $3.49.

"They used to have some that were lower and some were higher but now they are all the same," said customer Karen Rubio.

The customers we spoke with say those feeling the most pain at the pump are the ones with poor gas mileage.

"That is high, especially with people that have trucks you know and them gas guzzlers," said Picon.

"It does get expensive. A car like mine has got a V8 engine and it wastes a lot of gas," said Mariano Flores.

Others say since gas is such a necessity, the price doesn't matter.

"I think as long as people need gas they are going to buy gas, I dont care what the price is," said one customer.

Experts say seeing this spike so early in the year is concerning, and if prices continue to rise we could see a national average of over $4 per gallon.
