Gusty winds causing the blizzard like conditions are also causing snow drifts which the Department of Public Safety said can be extremely dangerous for drivers.

Strong winds will blow the snow into piles on the roads and drivers don't realize how deep some of them can be and drive right over them and get stuck.

At that point, someone would have to come rescue the driver, but Sgt. Brian Witt with DPS said the problem with that is police and troopers have the same type of vehicles not and they can easily get stuck too.

The National Guard has been activated and will be in Lubbock with vehicles better equipped for these snow drifts to help get people out.

If you do get stuck in one of these snow drifts, Sgt. Witt urges you to stay inside your vehicle and call for help.

"Stay in their vehicles don't be wandering around the vehicle because they could get lost or disoriented and actually freeze," said Witt.  "So they need to make sure they turn their hazards on their high beams on and make sure we can see them."
